On a warm sunny day 70 plus junior Club players, ages ranging from 6 – 18years, came together to play some competitive fun hockey. The day was made even better with the presence of England and GB player Jo Ellis, who was on hand to pass on coaching points to the kids playing, to sign autographs and to make the presentation of trophies to players at the end of the day. Jo commented after the event “Thank you for a lovely day. The children looked like they were really enjoying themselves and they had a successful season by all accounts. It was lovely to see such a family atmosphere at the ground and after at the presentation, really nice feel to Thirsk Hockey Club and I look forward to seeing you all again at the Championships Trophy in Notts.”

YORKSHIRE MINI CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY 11TH APRIL.
A warm Sunday morning on 11th April saw teams from Thirsk at U10 boys, U10 girls and U12 girls compete at Pocklington in the Yorkshire round of the EH Yazoo Club Mini Hockey Championships. There were 7 other clubs at each age group, the winners and runners-up in each group would go through to the North of England final.
U10 Boy’s.
Thirsk’s first pool game was against Rotherham. Jordan Hollywood made his debut for Thirsk in goal, and was soon into the action, as some poor clearing at the back gave Rotherham the chance to score from a rebounded save. Thirsk began to create some better passing movement, Harry Palmer passing well from the back, Harry Collinson finding Sam Bosomworth in good attacking areas, and Harry Goodall working hard. Thirsk’s first goal involved Harry C again finding Sam, who switched it inside for Harry G, who slotted home the equaliser. Thirsk were soon ahead as Harry C found Sam in space and he neatly finished. Thirsk continued to press, but could not convert. Rotherham in the final minute, managed to force a penalty corner, the Thirsk defence were slow to react, and Rotherham shot home for a 2-2 draw.
The second game was against Bridlington. Thirsk were much quicker into their stride in this game and with Connor Watson and Ben McIntosh in the starting line up, Thirsk applied a lot of pressure in the Bridlington circle. Chances fell to several players, but the Bridlington goal keeper made a series of outstanding saves. Thirsk continued to press, and Jay Coyne passed to Sam on the left, who cleverly found Harry C, and he was able to break the Bridlington defiance for a much deserved 1-0 win.
The final pool game was against Ben Rhydding, who had won their first two games. Thirsk were again pressing from the start. James Ward with some good battling in the mid-field helped to restrict Ben Rhydding. Sam and Harry C combining well again and gaining Thirsk several penalty corners, unfortunately none were converted. Ben Rhydding broke clear down the left, and caught our midfield out, and despite a good initial save from Jordan, they were able to scramble the ball in for a 1-0 lead. Thirsk continued to press, and Sam was denied by a good save from their keeper, and it finished 1-0 to Ben Rhydding.
Thirsk finished second in the pool and through to a semi-final with unbeaten Hull. Thirsk created some good passing play from the start, and Harry G and Jay were able to feed Sam up front, but he was quickly closed down. Thirsk’s shooting seemed to miss the target. Hull had their chances too, and Jordan made two good saves, the third save however dropped to a Hull player who put away the rebound. They soon made it 2-0 following another rebound from a save from Jordan. Thirsk tried hard to get back but could not score.
Thirsk finished with a 3rd/4th place playoff with Wakefield. Although both teams looked tired, it was Thirsk who took the lead, Harry P passing to James, who found Harry C on the right, he drove into the circle, and from a narrow angle shot home inside the far post. Thirsk continued to attack, and Sam hit the post with a fierce shot, but it was Harry C who wrapped it up with a well struck second to give Thirsk a 2-0 win, and 3rd place in the Yorkshire Mini’s. Ben Rhydding went on to beat Hull 1-0 in the final.
Many congratulations to all who took part, Thirsk’s first ever season with an U10 Boys team has shown that we can compete with everyone and anyone, a great team effort! Thank you to all the parents for all your support, and for your help during the season.

U10 Girls
In a pool of four Thirsk were to play Wakefield Wildcats, Driffield and Doncaster. All players acquitted themselves well, and Anna Almond, Megan Allen and Grace Stevenson must be commended and recognised for volunteering to take it in turns to go in goal.
Frederica Crouch and Ella Durkin playing solid defensive hockey clearing the ball away from the danger area, with Grace Stephenson taking up a defensive/midfield role, always willing to battle for the ball and move it to eagerly waiting forward line up of Oona Webster-Jones and Fern Watson out on the right, Megan Allen out on the left and an ever persistent centre forward Emma Ward, with Gaby Bell on hand to pick up any role asked of her.
Their first game against Doncaster saw end to end hockey being played and it wasn’t till near the end of the game that the deadlock was broken with the only goal of the game coming from Thirsk’s Emma Ward.
With one win under their belts Thirsk’s next game was against Driffield which they just couldn’t capitalise on the previous win, even with all the play being in the Driffield half Thirsk just couldn’t get through the Driffield defence ending with a 0 – 0 goalless result.
Their final group game against Wakefield Wildcats proved to be a hard one for the youngsters. Having to play straight after the last game a tiring Thirsk team found it tough and were under constant pressure from the off by Wakefield. At the end of this game the result was a 4 – 0 win to Wakefield.
With one win, a goalless draw and a loss Thirsk went through to the semi finals, as runners up, on goal difference. Having to face the winner of the other group Ben Rhydding they knew this would be a tough one. Thirsk started well with many chances to upset Rhydding which they just couldn’t convert. Rhydding took advantage of Thirsk having pushed up the pitch and on a breakaway they scored their first of five goals. Thirsk just couldn’t reply to this and eventually went down to eventually competition winners with a 5 – 0 loss.
So they were now in the 3rd/4th playoff position this was against Sheffield again this game saw good end to end hockey being played. With only a couple of minutes left in the game Sheffield scored the winning goal.
At the end of the mornings enthralling hockey Thirsk are to be congratulated on coming 4th in the Yorkshire Club Mini Hockey Championship. Well Done girls. A big, big thank you must be given to all the parents for there support throughout the day.

U12 Girls
Thirsk U12’s competed in pool B of the Yorkshire Mini Hockey Championships.
The first game was with a strong Sheffield team, and Thirsk were slow to get their passing going. Cathia Cummins and Ilana Bartlett in defence were struggling to contain the Sheffield forwards, and following an initial good save by Laura Bosomworth in the Thirsk goal, Sheffield followed up for a 1-0 lead. Thirsk fought hard through Anna Durkin, and Georgina Watkiss, but Sheffield kept going and despite several good saves from Laura, Sheffield extended their lead, eventually running out 4-0 winners.
The next game with Driffield was more closely contested, Keira Morgan-Williams and Vicky Frost combining well to test their goalkeeper. Thirsk passed much better, Anna driving well down the right, and should really have taken the lead, but a lack of concentration gave Driffield the chances. Laura made another good save to keep Thirsk in the game, but was unable to prevent a well struck penalty corner strike. Driffield had another clear chance and converted it for a 2-0 win.
The final game was against Ben Rhydding. Thirsk were under pressure again from the start, but battled hard in midfield, Ella Almond and Georgia Robson both tried hard defensively. Cathia and Anna showed great determination, and Laura was forced to make many good saves. Thirsk did have their chances with Georgina and Vicky getting shots in on goal. But in the end the pressure told, and Thirsk lost 3-0 to a good team.
Congratulations to all who took part. Although it was tough they all kept going to the end. Thanks to all the parents for their support.

NORTH YORKSHIRE
CLUB MINI HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2010
at Harrogate HC.

SUCCESSFUL DAY FOR THIRSK HOCKEY CLUB

U10 BOYS
Thirsk were in a round robin with York and Harrogate to play for one of two places in the Yorkshire finals on the 11th April.

Thirsk started against York, and it was a chance for a debut for Jay Coyne and Harry Palmer. Thirsk were up to speed from the off, putting York under pressure. Strong Midfield work from Sam Bosomworth, Jay Coyne and Harry Collinson gave Thirsk some control, and with some slick passing from Jay to Harry Goodall, followed by a great cross, for Sam to slot the ball home for a one nil lead. York was soon 2-0 down when Harry Collinson latched onto a poor defensive clearance, to go one on one with their keeper, and score. York did press Thirsk, but William Wilson making his debut from the subs bench and Harry Palmer looking assured helped to keep York at bay for a deserved 2-0 win.

The second game with Harrogate was closer from the start. Harrogate attacked down the right, James Ward worked hard, and Reece Johnson was forced to make a solid save. Harrogate got a penalty corner, but Harry Collinson was quick out to close them out. Thirsk made a break and Connor Watson latched onto Harry Goodall’s pass, drove on into the circle and put away a fierce shot for 1-0. Thirsk looked more confident and Ben McIntosh fed through to Harry Palmer, onto Harry Goodall, whose good cross was again met by Sam Bosomworth, who cleverly clipped it through his legs past their keeper, 2-0. Although Harrogate continued to press, Thirsk held out for the 2-0 win.
Well done to all who took part, and thanks to all the supporters who attended and also to young umpire Dean Porter. We look forward to the Yorkshire round in April.

U10 GIRLS
Sunday 7th March saw the North Yorkshire Mini Club Hockey Championships take place at Harrogate HC and what a fantastic afternoon to play and watch hockey. The sun was out and the frost of earlier in the day had dissipated. The tournament began at 2pm and due to the date of age eligibility of the competition Thirsk was able to bring some of the younger players in to play their first hockey matches for the club. Thirsk played the first match and making their début were Megan Allen, Gabriella Bell, Grace Stevenson, Fern Watson and Oona Webster-Jones. Our veteran players were Frederica Crouch, Ella Durkin, Emma Ward and Marianne Morrice who is normally an outfield player and took the role of goalkeeper at the last minute, Megan Knowles unfortunately unable to play on the day.

The first match was against Harrogate. Although there was a lot of ball following to begin with the team soon began to work together. To say a lot of the team had never played a full match before the quality of their coaching was evident thanks to Catherine Wilson and Jo Lightfoot. The girls fought for every ball and never stopped pressing onwards. We were lucky that we had two extra players, as due to the effort the girls were putting in we had to keep rolling players on and off throughout the match as they were becoming very tired. The girls' valiant efforts were rewarded with a 2-1 win with Emma Ward scoring two fantastic goals with the help of the whole team.

The match against York was a little more difficult. They were an experienced team and clearly had played together a great deal. However, although their togetherness and communication was at a high level the Thirsk girls managed to hold them off and there were some fantastic saves from Marianne which held the match to 2-0 but if not for the fantastic effort from the Thirsk girls the defending and teamwork this score-line could have been even higher.

Harrogate then played York in the last match with York winning 3-1. Final results for the competition had York in first place, with Thirsk in second place. This means that the girls have made it through to the next round which will be played in Wakefield on 11th April. The matches were thrilling and exhilarating to watch, evident in the parents who had come to support nearly losing their voices in the excitement. The promise this team shows is credit to the hard work all the girls put into their matches.

Thanks also to young umpire Rafe Skippings his support was appreciated.

Well done girls! Report by Sharon Porter-Grainger, Team Manager

U12 BOYS
The Thirsk boys squad were just unable to play their normal game during this competition, and even though they did at times put in some good passes and did plenty of movement off the ball they just couldn’t penetrate the oppositions defence. On the odd occasion that they did they were rewarded with a penalty flick but unfortunately did not manage to convert it.

There first game drawing against Harrogate 0 – 0, City of York B loosing 1 – 0 and final game City of York A team loosing 4 – 0.

U12 GIRLS – A SQUAD
Thirsk A team got off to a good start, lots of good team work and strong passing, and gave them a well deserved 2-0 win. against York B.

They then came up against their fellow club mates Thirsk B team. Both teams worked hard and the A team took a while to penetrate some good defensive work from the opposition. Finally getting through and again winning 2-0.

Thirsk then came up against York A team, managing to push the ball forward early, scoring the only goal of the game within the 1st few minutes. The defence worked hard to keep out any goals, making sure of their tackles and transferring the ball out of danger. A very good team effort and a well deserved win.

The final game against Harrogate was an end to end battle again the defence working hard and the goal keeper making good saves and clearing the ball well off the line. The forwards managing to move the ball quickly back up the pitch to score finishing with another 1-0 win.

Thirsk A team won all 4 games and have gone through to the next round of the mini championships.

Thanks go to Young Umpire Rafe Skippings, Young Leaders Anna Brooke and Liza Makin for helping out on the day.

U12 GIRLS – B SQUAD
Preparing for the mini championships we found ourselves in the enviable position of being able to enter 2 teams for the U12 girls section of the tournament. There were a few of the Thirsk U10 team who found themselves unable to play in the U10 match due to the date of the age eligibility; luckily they were able to play in the U12 second team.

For the first time in goal was Emily Wright, our veteran players being Aemelia Crouch, Rosie Hare, Annabel Hill, Emily Wright and Charlie Shaw and making their début in their first competitive matches were Anna Goldie and Holly Chandler, which was against a strong York A team loosing this game 3 – 0.

Thirsk B's second match was against Thirsk A. Once the managers had got used to not saying Thirsk and calling the teams by the colour of their shirts, there was less confusion on the pitch. The match was electric, all the girls know and play each other but there was no complacency from either team. There was a good friendly atmosphere to the game and the game was held to a 2-0 win to Thirsk A. There was some skilful defending by Thirsk B and the girls fought well in a match that could have easily have ended with more goals against them.

The third match was against Harrogate. From the offset Harrogate were strong and Thirsk could not quite get on top of the game. As with all matches the girls put in maximum effort but the Harrogate team were that little bit stronger and more experienced together. This game ended in a 4-0 win to Harrogate with fantastic performances from all the girls especially the defenders and goalkeeper.

Our fourth and last match against York B this match was played straight after the third and the girls were beginning to get tired. However this did not prevent them putting there all into the last match of the tournament. This game was quite evenly matched and towards the end Thirsk had two penalty corners in succession but unfortunately they were fruitless. The game ended in a 0-0 draw which was a good result for Thirsk.

Unfortunately there were to be no goals scored in the U12 matches for Thirsk B team but all the girls should be proud of the effort they put in and the sportsmanship they showed throughout the competition to their opposition. I would also like to say on behalf of the Thirsk B team a huge congratulations and well done to Thirsk A who won the group competition and will go through to the next round. Well done to both Thirsk teams you both did the club proud.

I would also like to say a big thank you to Rafe Skippings and Liza Makin for their help in umpiring the matches.
