SEASON END GAMES 10TH APRIL.
Three of the four senior teams played on Saturday 10th April to bring the season to an end. The men's first team were the non-playing team having secured a very positive 4th place in the 2nd division; the best yet for a Thirsk team. The seconds were away playing a Wakefield 6th team, a team they had comfortably beaten when at home. It seems that Wakefield had decided to include several higher team players and so for Thirsk it was a very difficult game. Despite being 2-0 down at half time they continued to pressure the Wakefield defence and their England under 18 goalkeeper (also Wakefield first team), eventually being rewarded with a goal by captain Richard Taylor. A further problem was caused when one of the Thirsk players was sent off and even with only 10 on the field still caused problems for the home team. A 2-1 loss was a disappointing result but a reflection on the ability and determination of the squad. This leaves them 3rd in division 8, their best ever position. Next season sees a change to the division structure and Thirsk 2nds will be playing in division 6 (north).
Thirsk Ladies II's travelled to Pickering to play their last game of the season, on the hottest day of the year so far, with both teams fighting for the top position in the league!
Both teams were evenly matched although Thirsk seemed to have a little more of the play and possession but the first half ended in a goalless draw. Following the half time break Pickering seemed to pick up the pace and Thirsk found themselves having to do a bit more defending than in the first half but it was Thirsk who opened the scoring when Jade Beckwith, with a well struck ball from a penalty corner, found the back of the net. This seemed to make the home team even more determined and after being awarded a few short corners and Thirsk very successfully defending them, Pickering managed to score from a ball saved by Emily Bull, Thirsk's keeper, but which rebounded onto the stick of a Pickering player who shot and equallised the scoreline.
The final result was 1 - 1 and Emily Thorpe was awarded Player of the Match. The draw ensures Thirsk of promotion as division 6 champions and being the only team in the ladies league to lose just one game in the season.
The ladies first team were due to play at home against Wakefield 3rds. They were awarded the game 3-0 as Wakefield conceded. Thirsk achieved 9th place in the premier division having won promotion there last season.
27TH MARCH RESULTS.
Thirsk men's first team ended the season on a high, taking all 3 points from Leeds Adel to continue their good run of form and finish the season in a highly respectable 4th place in division 2 - especially having been in the relegation zone at Christmas. Despite numerous changes from the team that so dominated the game the previous week Thirsk were able to continue with their impressive style of play and moved the ball around nicely. It wasn’t long before they took the lead when good interchange down the left flank led to Nathan Harding feeding a ball into Paul Doyle who drove to the by-line and, at the second time of asking, was able to fire in from an acute angle. Thirsk continued to apply the pressure and the ball was soon in the back of the net again from a short corner, only for the effort to be ruled out for an infringement in the build-up play. A driving run down the right by Phil Hughes led to another chance in the D, the keeper saving Paul Doyle’s shot only for the rebound to fall kindly to Rob Ramsden who slotted home with ease. After the break Thirsk pushed forward again, Jack Moody providing some excellent support play from midfield for the forwards. Despite a host of chances going begging Andy Carney was able to slip in the 3rd for Thirsk to give them a comfortable cushion. Which was just as well - Leeds attempted to stage a comeback and managed to pull a goal back. Excellent defending – particularly from the ever-green and sprightly Andy Young and Patrick Jackson helped keep the visitors at bay despite a renewed spell of pressure. Final score Thirsk 3, Leeds 1. Thirsk have finished their season with one of the highest league positions in recent memory. Captain Phil Hughes thanked all those who have played for, and helped out with, the 1sts this season. Over 30 players have been used, and it’s a tribute to the strength of both the mens sides that everyone has done so well when they’ve come into the side. A special thank you also goes to Jerry Hall, for his tireless efforts umpiring and driving players to games each week.
The men's second team were away at City of Leeds and dominated the game after a nervous first ten minutes. The scoring started with a well worked move into the Leeds D setting up Trevor Bosomworth for a shot passing behind the keeper. Thirsk continued to pass the ball around using strong attacking play but still only managed to end the half 1-0 up. However after the break the work rate paid off and Ben Taylor finished off a great run and cross from the right wing by Chris Gabbott. A short time later a short corner routine was scooped into the top left corner by Ian Foxley. More runs down the right by Chris, domination of the mid field by Ian, Trevor and Ben and solid defence by Sam Knox, Nick Lane, Mike Rushmere and Marcus Taylor ensured that the only threats were to the Leeds goal. One of many attacks was then finished with a sharp shot from Liam Evans. A well deserved result of 4-0 taking the team to 3rd place in division 8 with one game remaining and the possibility of a 2nd place finish to the season. Joe Dickinson in goal, and youngsters Dean Porter and Rafe Skippings rounded out the squad.
Thirsk Ladies 1st Team were at home against Boston Spa who are second in the league table. Thirsk started quickly and tried to pressure the Boston Spa defence early on, but their defence reacted quickly and soon gained possession of the ball. They switched it round the Thirsk players who struggled to pick up the Boston Spa runners. Thirsk soon broke their pace with a great tackle from Siobhan Gill and good movement of the ball in the midfield from Lynne Mckeown and Hannah Rogers into the Boston Spa’s defence, Thirsk were unlucky not to receive a short corner and a quick ball taken by Boston Spa, saw Thirsk conceed their first goal of the match. Boston Spa then stepped on the pace and they had some great play with which Thirsk could not interfere and not long after Thirsk were struggling with a score of 3-0. Thirsk had to keep up the pressure and a good run from Jen Sanderson and Nic Gill and a lovely pass to Helen Goacher, Thirsk were soon on the score sheet just before half time with 3-1. The start of the second half, Boston Spa soon picked up the loose balls from a couple of inaccurate passes from the Thirsk team and soon Boston Spa added to their score with a smashing shot on goal, which Thirsk could clear. During the second half Boston Spa had a lot of shots on goal but were unsuccessful due to great saves from Val Grainger and some great defending and clearances from Steph Wilkinson, Stacey Lewis and Pip Carrick. Thirsk soon made a run with a great ball from Lynne in midfield to Helen who picked it up and drove to the keeper, the first shot on goal was saved but Helen was there for the rebound and the ball hit the back of the goal. Boston Spa added one more goal to their tally and at full time the score was 5-2. Player of the match was Steph Wilkinson.

The ladies seconds did not play. The last games for the ladies teams and the men's seconds are due to be played on the 10th April.
GAMES ON 20TH MARCH.
Finally, as the season draws towards a close, Thirsk men's first team put in a performance like they’ve been threatening to do for the entire season. And it came with a scoreline to match! The game had barely started when Andy Carney slotted in the first goal – bang, only 15 seconds gone. Sheffield Bankers looked shell-shocked as they restarted the game but straight away lost possession. Thirsk passed it around nicely before moving it upfield, - bang, two to nil, two minutes gone. This theme pretty much continued through-out the first half and Thirsk found themselves comfortably 6-0 up by halftime – you’ll have to forgive the vagueness of this write-up as the pace of the game and the speed at which the goals came meant that they all somewhat blurred into one! The pick of the goals was Rob Ramsden’s solo effort, a skilful reverse strike from the edge of the D that whistled past the keeper and slammed just inside the post into the side netting. That’s not to say it was a one man show however, Thirsk past the ball beautifully, shifting play from left to right and visa versa. The passing was sublime and the only negative about the second half was Thirsk were only able to add a single goal to their total. Nathan Harding making his second start for the 1st team this season was sublime down the left hand side and ran Rob Ramsden close for the man of the match award, but after Rob had scored his hat-trick it was always going to be difficult to take this away from him. Andy Carney and Paul Doyle both chipped in with a brace apiece to finish the scoring off and leave Thirsk pushing up the table challenging for a 4th place finish this season. Result Thirsk 7, Sheffield Bankers 0.
This week the Thirsk Ladies first team were at home playing Wakefield 4s. The weather was wet and windy but Thirsk made sure this did not dampen their spirits. The game started quickly with some early attacks from the Wakefield forwards and soon Thirsk conceeded their first goal of the match. Thirsk soon picked up their game and Hannah Fletcher made some great tackles in defence, so enabled some strong runs from Ruth Colesten and Emily Thorpe (making her debut from the Ladies 2nd Team). Nic Gill drove into the Wakefield defence and with some great determination and a rebound from the Wakefield goalie, Nic made sure the back board was on the end of her pass, to put Thirsk at a draw of 1-1 at half time. Thirsk increased the pressure and the pace at the start of the second half, which was shown by most of the possession of the ball. However an unlucky Wakefield ball finding the goal allowed them to go 2-1 ahead. A breaking run from Helen Goacher and a strong pass to Jen Sanderson, which she dodged past the Wakefield Goalie, and earned Thirsk a penalty flick as a result of an illegal tackle from the Wakefield Defence. Unfortunalty Thirsk were unable to execute the penalty flick successfully and the score remained at 2- 1. Wakefield soon increased their lead with another goal and their last of the match. Thirsk remained strong willed to the end and a very good run from Nic and a strong strike at goal finalised the game with a result of 3-2. Val Grainger achieved a well earned player of the match with some outstanding saves and clearances. With two games remaining Thirsk lie 9th in the premier division but cannot be relegated what ever results they achieve.
Thirsk men's seconds were looking to get back to winning ways, knowing that 3 wins in their last three games would guarantee at least a top 3 finish this season. So taking on Slazengers away, Thirsk started well and created several chances, before going ahead through a well placed shot from the edge of the circle by Trevor Bosomworth. Thirsk were giving debuts to Dean Porter, and Rafe Skippings; and Martin Brown was only having his second ever start. This lack of familiarity probably led to Thirsk not clearing their lines well, and this allowed Slazengers some chances, they converted two for a 2-1 lead at half-time.
Thirsk’s Captain Richard Taylor worked his magic at half-time, and Thirsk came out with intent in the second half. The passing was much slicker and the movement far better. Thirsk created mayhem for the Slazengers defence. Liam Evans bagged a brace in quick succession before Ben Taylor got in on the act from a penalty corner. Rafe then put Thirsk into a 5-2 lead with a well placed finish. Slazengers pulled one back through a well worked penalty corner, and thought they had a chance of coming back into the game at this stage. But Thirsk found another gear, and good passing work from defence by Marcus Taylor, Sam Knox and Nick Lane gave the assurance to the midfield to push further forward. Many well worked chances were created with Liam getting his third with a well placed shot, and his fourth with a little help from their keeper ! Ben got his second and Thirsk could probably have had more ! A final score of 8-3 to Thirsk. This puts them in 3rd place in division 8.
The ladies seconds were due to play Wakefield who could not make a team and so conceeded the game. The seconds are now sure of promotion and are only 1 point away from being division 6 champions.
GAMES ON 13TH MARCH.
The Ladies firsts were at Home against Slazengers this week. Full of the joys of spring Thirsk sprung into action on a glorious day! The game started well with Thirsk having most of the possession and managing to have a few shots on goal which were unsuccessful. Slazengers soon picked up their pace and Thirsk were unlucky to conceed a goal in the first 15 minutes. Thirsk managed to settle again and a good drive in from Lynne Mckeown and Hannah Rogers, Thirsk were awarded with a penalty corner and a strong ball in and a final tap past the goalie to the backboard from Helen Goacher saw Thirsk hold on for a 1 – 1 draw at the half time whistle. Slazengers picked up the pace at the start of the second half and a ball dribbled from the push back nearly led to Thirsk been a goal down but some good defending from Steph Wilkinson and a strong save from Val Grainger enabled Thirsk to hold on to the draw. Slazengers scraped back another goal despite the Thirsk defenders best efforts to clear the ball, putting Thirsk one goal behind. Thirsk managed to pick their heads up and keep the pressure on and the effort of the whole team paid off. A strong run down the wing by Anna Hunter and a great cross right in front of the Slazengers goal to Stacey Bell, on return to the Thirsk team, who delivered a strong reverse stick hit onto the backboard. The final score was 2-2. Steph Wilkinson was player of the match.
The men's seconds were also at home against division 8 leaders Bingley. The first half was mostly in Thirsk's favour with the only reason for a 0-0 half time being the Bingley goal keeper managing to stop all Thirsk's efforts. The second half started in much the same fashion and it was soon obvious that the first goal would seal the match. Unfortunately it was Bingley that achieved this despite the continued solid Thirsk defending. This was then followed by a further 2 goals for Bingley as Thirsk tried to push players forward to level the match. Final result of 3-0 did not reflect the effort or chances that Thirsk had. They are now 4th in division 8 with three games remaining.
Thirsk men's 1st team struggled to make an impact on their opponents this weekend, going down 4-1 to their hosts Rotherham. Three points would have seen Thirsk all but safe for the season but a series of injuries and availability problems meant Thirsk travelled to Rotherham with an under-strength side. However, they should have made Rotherham work harder for their 3 points. Some slack defending saw Thirsk twice caught on the break in the first half and 2-0 down by halftime. A re-shuffle after the break saw Rob Ramsden, returning to the side after a number of weeks, revert to a midfield role and the extra presence in the middle almost forced enough pressure to turn the game around. A well won short corner was slipped to Dave Pickford on the left. Despite his shot being saved good determination by Chris Gabbott lead to Thirsk halving the deficit. However, the pacey Rotherham wingers were giving Sam Knox and Andy Young a torrid time and the increased pressure lead to a series of short corners, one of which found the target shortly after Thirsk had scored theirs. Worse was to come as Thirsk conceded a 4th and captain Phil Hughes was forced to retire injured. Man of the match Andy Loftus was again in sparkling form and was called on numerous times to keep the score respectable. However, it was to no avail and Thirsk had to make the long trip back home pointless.
The ladies seconds drew 1-1 away to the City of York.
RESULTS FOR 6 AND 7 MAR.
The ladies second's were at home against Leeds Adel who played good two touch hockey around Thirsk for most of the 1st half. Thirsk unable to connect as a team and ended up 1-0 down at the end of the first half. A good team talk at half time, seemed to do the trick and Thirsk came out fighting. Lots of good off the ball running and good creation of space alongside a determination not to lose all helped towards a 2-1 win to Thirsk. Player of the Match was Jade Beckwith. Goal scorer Steph Evans x2.
The men's seconds were away at Ben Rhydding and were only able to field a side of 10, although an experienced and determined one. The opposition, which included several young 14 year old players were soon on the attack and were rewarded after about 10 minutes with a well struck goal. Thirsk are not known this season for letting the odd goal against get them down and produced some excellent passing and running hockey to put pressure on the Ben Rhydding goal. Several short corners were awarded and from one of these a goal was scored by Liam Evans after an accurate shot to the back post by Dick Edwards, was deflected in. Half time and all square. More chances followed after the change round and a penalty stroke was awarded to Ben Rhydding which was converted and gave them the lead. Yet more fast attacks and drives into their D provided Thirsk with yet more short corner chances. One of these with some 10 minutes to go produced another goal after a strike by Richard Taylor was going in but was assisted over the line by Liam. This was a well deserved result for Thirsk through a show of total effort and running.
Thirsk men's first's moved back up the table by a place and are almost assured of safety next season following a well fought win against rivals Ben Rhydding this weekend. The Thirsk side were again missing numerous regular first teamers and saw Nathan Harding making his first start of season in central midfield. Thirsk again found themselves trailing early in the first half when sloppy play gifted the visitors an easy chance. However, Thirsk dug deep and a Paul Doyle cross from the right found its way to the far post where Andy Carney was on hand to tap in his 17 of the season. Thirsk looked to be controlling the half, building pressure on the away goal, but a quick break down their right left Don Petty exposed and unable to prevent the cross which made it 2-1 just before the break. In the 2nd half Thirsk came out fighting. Solid defensive work by Nathan Harding frustrated Ben Rhydding and allowed a platform for Thirsk to build from. A much better distribution of the ball saw Martin Garner frequently feeding Andy Young out on the right which enabled Chris Gabbott to attack his man down that flank. Good running on the other side of the pitch by Pete Harding also posed the visitors defence problems and it was no surprise when Doyle again crossed for Carney to tap in to equalise (albeit with a generous amount of help from their keeper). Thirsk went for the win, and when Phil Hughes fed Paul Doyle late in the half his pace saw him outstrip the defence and slot a shot past the advancing keeper. The win had more than a hint of smash and grab about it, stout defending was needed to maintain all three points, but with the remaining fixtures left and some clear daylight between themselves and the bottom 2 sides now Thirsk can potentially start turning their thoughts to next season. Result Thirsk 3 Ben Rhydding 2.
Thirsk Ladies first team were away for their first match of the weekend at Leeds Adel. The game started quickly with Thirsk having to play defensively from the push back. Leeds increased the pressure on the Thirsk defence and an unlucky deflection off a Thirsk stick put Leeds Adel 1-0 up. Thirsk soon turned the game around, and with some lovely play down the right wing by Steph Wilkinson and Hannah Rogers, Thirsk soon found themselves in Leeds Adels’ half and a good drive in from Jen Sanderson saw Thirsk awarded with their first penalty corner of the match. Leeds Adel picked up the Thirsk attacking players with some great defending Thirsk were unable to secure a goal. Unfortunalty with continued strong play from Thirsk they could not catch Leeds Adel and at full time the score remained at 1-0. Ruth Colesten was player of the match.
Thirsk ladies 1st's also found themselves having to play their second match of the weekend, against Leeds 1sts. The fact that they played probably the best hockey of their season, they were unlucky to conceed an early goal and then not long after failed to convert a penalty flick. The game continued to be a very even match and the final score line of 4-0 to Leeds, did not reflect the overall competitive game. Steph Wilkinson was player of the match although the whole team deserve a special mention for their hard work and determination. Despite these two results they are still 8th in the Premier division and 6 points off relegation.
GAMES RESULTS FOR 28 FEB.
The Ladies first team this week were at home against Harrogate . Thirsk, with no subs, had to make sure they were on top form. The game started quickly and some good movements between the midfield players from Hannah Fletcher, Anna Hunter and Lynne Mckeown, saw Thirsk being awarded a penalty corner as the Harrogate defence were put under pressure. Mckeown put Thirsk in front with a strong strike. Thirsk kept up the pressure and some great defending was seen from Pippa Carrick, Ruth Colesten, Charlotte Maxwell and Stacey Lewis. Mckeown soon added another goal to the score sheet. Thirsk kept up their momentum with some great play between Nic Gill, Helen Goacher and Lizzie Walters and Thirsk were soon awarded a third goal by Gill. Harrogate scraped back their first goal of the match, towards the end of the first half. In the second half Thirsk managed to consolidate their position, and won the game with a final result of 3-1. Stacey Lewis was Player of the match. The ladies remain 8th in the Premier division of the Yorkshire league.
The men's seconds were at home against Halifax 3rd's a team just above them in division 8. Despite Thirsk having a strong squad of 15 players to choose from, it was Halifax who were able to find the net with a strong reverse stick shot after only 5 minutes play. The game then proceeded to speed up and both teams had chances with some strong passing and running. Despite the chances it was Halifax who scored again and Thirsk were not achieving a result that they expected. However, further pressure produced a short corner for Thirsk just as the first half was ending and the resulting lifted sweep by Ian Foxley slotted into the net wide of the keeper. The second half saw the subs brought on and after the half time talk the team seemed to get it's head together and pressured Halifax on a constant basis. The result a great goal on the reverse stick by Robert Ramsden and another short corner converted by Ian Foxley with a cracking shot in under the keeper and Thirsk were ahead. Halifax then decided to push forward more and despite strong defence by Thirsk, a short corner was awarded. The goal that came was bundled in and so with only a few minutes to go the game was back to all square. Thirsk were still pressing forward when the final whistle went and so a 3-3 draw left the two teams even and Thirsk remain 3rd in the division. Also congratulations to Dick Edwards who was watched during this game and has achieved his umpiring level 1.
Thirsk ladies 2nd’s started strongly away at Halifax , with most of the possession through the 1st half. Despite this it took Thirsk until the second half before a strong strike from the edge of the D broke the deadlock. The game became more open after this, but Thirsk finished off the game with another goal from a short corner to bring the score to 2-0. Goal scorers Rosie Wilson & Bev Petty. POM Charlotte Daynes.
Another late away match saw Thirsk travel to Sheffield for 4.30 push back. The lateness of the start meant numerous players were unavailable but it was still a strong side that looked to take on the home team from the Steel City . Thirsk started brightly with Chris Gabbott in particular having an excellent game down the left flank, his pace and willingness to drive at the defence causing Sheffield trouble. However, after 15 minutes of the game a misplaced hit –out fell to the Sheffield forward and despite the best efforts of Andy Loftus and Jonathan Sharmann the Sheffield team had the easiest of chances which they converted well. Thirsk continued to press but enforced changes meant a re-shuffle of the midfield in the 2nd half. Despite continuing to build well down the right it was Sheffield that struck first again in the second half. Thirsk, who were below par by their own standards, had been building pressure down both flanks and had been looking like they might get back into the game but this blow sapped the confidence out of the side whilst giving fresh strength to Sheffield. Ian McClare and Paul Doyle managed to create a couple of half chances but these were to no avail. Thirsk find themselves currently in 9th place, with the bottom three sides still to play they should finish the season with a flurry but the spectre of relegation still remains a possible, but unlikely, scenario. Thirsk 0 – 2 Sheffield Hallam 4ths
SECOND TEAM SQUAD 28 FEB.

MATCHES PLAYED ON 20TH FEB
A late start for the ladies 2nds against Horsforth 2nds- who had gone to York? - meant a shortened game in which it was end-to-end play. Thirsk took the lead late into the first half with a scrappy goal tapped in, just in front of the keeper by Steph Evans. Half way through the second half Jade Beckwith for Thirsk doubled their lead with a well worked short corner to finish the match with a deserved 2-0 win. Player Of the Match: Chrissy Stapley-Hinton. This win consolidates the ladies at the top of division 6.
The men's 2nds were away at Huddersfield against their 5ths, a team just below Thirsk in division 8. Thirsk started briskly and in similar fashion to last week's game passed the ball about and generally controlled the game through the centre half Ian Foxley, left half Jack Moody and right half Trevor Bosomworth. At the front Richard Taylor, Liam Evans and Ben Taylor continued to harry the Huddersfield defence and were awarded several short corners. It was at two of these that Thirsk scored, firstly with Trevor and second by Liam following up on the saved first strike. The second half did not see Thirsk loose their concentration and continued to pressure the opposition. The defence of Nick Lane sweeping, Jonathan Statham and Jack Radcliffe back line and Richard Skippings in goal ensured any Huddersfield attacks were well cleared. Another goal from an impossible angle, this time by Ben, secured the game just as the lights went out with 5 minutes still to play! The result, a 3-0 win, sees Thirsk move into 2nd position in division 8 with the other top 2 teams to play in the next 3 weeks.
Thirsk men's 1sts suffered their first defeat of 2010 this weekend against Huddersfield, but still maintain a respectable mid-table position. The game started poorly for Thirsk against the division 2 leader, finding themselves 1-0 down within the opening minutes. The ball was poorly given away in midfield and some slapstick defending allowed Huddersfield to take an early lead. The first half was a dour affair with Thirsk unable to get a grasp on the game and finding chances hard to come by. A second goal within the opening half gave the impression that the score might be a white wash however an invigorated side in the 2nd half came back into the game well. Stout defending enabled the midfielders and forwards to build on that platform and good work down the left by Pete Harding brought a number of chances. From one of the resulting short corners Paul Doyle slipped the ball left to Ian McClare to score an almost carbon copy of the goal from the week earlier. Second half yellow cards to Brian Cleere and Don Petty meant that Thirsk played the majority of the second period with 10 men and Andy Loftus was needed to be at his very best to keep Thirsk within touching distance. Despite having numerous chances near the end Thirsk were unable to pull the game level but it was a spirited second half performance that enabled Thirsk to leave the field with their heads held high.
MEN'S 2NDS MATCH REPORT BY TREVOR!
Thirsk needing a win to get their promotion run back on track travelled to Huddersfield. Inspired selection saw Richard Skippings starting in goal, and Joe Dickinson back from 6 weeks in plaster out on the left wing.
Thirsk started strongly and dominated the midfield well, Liam Evans and Ian Foxley creating a couple of chances. Johnathan Statham now having to concentrate on hockey following confirmation that his recent split chin has ended his modelling career, was spectacularly solid in defence, getting down low as ever.
The deadlock was broken when Nick Lane made what can only be described as a 89 yard run from defence. He self took a free hit, and seeing space, accelerated to beat defender after defender. He found himself inside their circle, thought of a pass briefly, beat the last defender and pushed under the keeper – wow ! For once the long run back into defence did not seem so far.
Thirsk then moved up a gear, and a move down the right with Richard Taylor supplying Trevor Bosomworth, saw him then rocket a ball in to Joe, who deceived everyone with his touch and made it 2-0. Chris Gabbott playing at centre forward latched onto a loose ball soon after and slotted home for a 3-0 half time lead.
The second half early exchanges were dominated by Huddersfield, and their youthful attackers asked questions of Sam Knox and Mike Rushmere in the Thirsk defence. Thirsk conceded two penalty corners, but they could not get a shot in thanks to Chris’s speed out. Huddersfield did score though when a hopeful ball through, saw a slight mix up between Johnathan and Richard, and their striker capitalised with a good finish.
This was the signal for Thirsk to move up a gear again, and with their superior fitness starting to show through, the passing game returned. Ian sending in several menacing crosses, Chris latched onto one, the keeper saved, Trevor followed up with a reverse stick slap, the defender was hit squarely on the line in the middle of the goal, and a flick was awarded. The Captain did his job and slotted it away well, 4-1.
It was soon 5-1 when a well worked penalty corner was slotted into the corner of the goal by Trevor. The game was wrapped up with a great solo effort from Chris, who weaved through 3 defenders before giving their keeper no chance. A solid 6-1 win will hopefully inspire confidence for the next few weeks as Thirsk play four of their main rivals in the next four fixtures.
Thanks to Dick for umpiring, even though he should have been busy back in the salon !
6TH FEB SEES FULL SET OF SENIOR GAMES
The men’s first team continued their 100% record in 2010 by notching up their second away win this season. As usual Thirsk found themselves trailing early in the 1st half following sloppy possession in defence had gifted the Wakefield forwards an undeserved opening. Thirsk continued to play the ball around nicely though and Ian McClare looked comfortable in the middle of the park, spraying passes around at will. Rob Ramsden, operating down the right, managed to slip a ball to Phil Hughes in the area, and the resultant cross was turned into his own net by the Wakefield defender. A 2nd Thirsk goal was to follow before half-time when Jonathan Sharman and Ian McClare combined to feed Hughes on the edge of the area. Hughes managed to jinx past a couple of defenders and slip the ball to leading scorer Andy Carney who clipped the ball past the onrushing keeper and into the goal. Thirsk started slowly in the second half but new signing Andy Loftus, returning
to his old club, rarely had a save to make. Thirsk managed to put the game beyond doubt when good play by the forwards gave Carney a chance to add a 2nd to his tally. Paul Doyle put in an excellent shift alongside Carney upfront, earning him the man of the match award for the day, and he was constantly a threat to Wakefield with his deliveries from wide positions. Result 3-1 to Thirsk. The 3 points gained this weekend lifts Thirsk clear of the relegation zone and up to 9th in table. With 2 games still in hand over some teams above them a strong finish and a respectable league position is still within sight.
Thirsk ladies seconds did not take full advantage throughout this game when Doncaster 4ths played without a keeper, instead using 11 outfield players. Despite lots of opportunities Thirsk didn’t capitalise on the numerous shots on goal with Doncaster defence working hard to clear the ball from danger. 3 goals scored in the 1st half by Orlagh, Nikki and Bev. Steph Evans unable to convert her many attempts. The fourth goal being the only goal in the second half scored again by Orlagh. Leaving the final score 4-0 to Thirsk. Player of the Match shared between Beth Bradbury & Katie Tankard.

Back row: Jade Beckwith, Sarah Goacher, Orlagh O'Shea, Katie Tankard, Chrissie Staplye-Hide, Steph Evans, Nicola Young, Jo Lightfoot (captain)
Front Row: Bev Petty, Beth Bradbury, Emma Linthwaite, Charlotte Daynes
The men's seconds were at home against Harrogate 4ths. A hard game both physically and hockey wise. Thirsk scored first after several attempts when Trevor Bosomworth latched on to a strong cross. Harrogate came back with several drives into the Thirsk D but were kept out; until being awarded a short corner they produced a strong strike which went in off the post. 1-1 at half time. The second half saw attacks at both ends and again some strong tackling kept the forwards of both sides under control. On one of these attacks, Harrogate were awarded a penalty flick from which they scored. Several more shot attempts by both teams were either saved or missed and the game finished 2-1 to Harrogate.
The ladies first team drew 2-2 away at Otliensians.
GAMES PLAYED ON 23RD JAN
After a two week extended break caused by the snow, Thirsk were back to their winning ways with their matches on Saturday 23rd. The men's 1sts were away at Sheffield Hallam for a late 4.30 push back; not the ideal start to the new year, especially since Sheffield Hallam were flying high in the table looking to secure promotion. The pitch had been cleared of snow but mounds of if still remained around the playing surface and it was a chilly afternoon to be playing hockey. Thirsk started brightly with Paul Doyle and Rob Ramsden making good runs down the right hand side but Hallam managed to take an early lead. It wasn’t to last long however as Paul and Rob combined again and the resulting cross into the area fell nicely to Chris Gabbott, making his second start for the first team this season, who struck the ball confidently into the corner evading the stranded keeper. Resolute defending at the back, not least from Jonathan Sharman who delivered a man of the match winning performance, kept the score level until the break. After the break Thirsk came out fighting. Don Petty playing in an unfamilier central midfield role, dominated in this position, and alongside Phil Hughes prevented Hallam from playing through the centre as they wanted to do. Excellent wing work from Gabbott and Ramsden closed down their wide play leaving the home side frustrated. The next goal deservedly went to Thirsk when Paul slipped a short corner back to Andy Carney who slotted it home with a deflection. Thirsk shortly after managed to extend their lead further when Paul, latching onto a Phil Hughes through ball, crossed for Andy who deftly diverted the smacked cross for his 2nd of the game. Despite having two men yellow carded later in the half Thirsk held out and managed to claim their first away win of the season. Those 3 points lifts them to 10th in the league, just out of the relegation zone. But the game in hand they have over many of the teams above them means its possible for them to climb to sixth in what is increasingly turning into the tightest league seen for many a season. The seconds were at home against Halifax 4ths. The game was very even with both sides benefitting from a strong defence. Despite having 5 short corners against only 1 for Halifax, Thirsk were unable to score. A 0-0 result leaves Thirsk second in division 8 but are now behind the division leaders by 4 points. The ladies 1sts were away at the Premier division leaders Leeds University and lost 8-2. They remain 8th in the division. The ladies 2nds at home against Slazengers started strongly with two early goals to take a two- nil lead. However Slazengers struck back with a goal from a short corner to bring the half time score to 2-1. Another fast start by Thirsk as a quick goal from a short corner doubled their lead, before a goal mouth scramble saw Slazengers get a goal back. Thirsk stayed strong and saw out the game scoring twice to run out emphatic victors with a final score of 5-2. Goal scorers: Jo Lightfoot – 1, Bev Petty – 1, Nikki Young-1, Emily Thorpe- 2. Player of the match well earned for Nikki Young. The seconds are now firmly at the top of division 6 and well clear of the next team.
ALL GAMES ON 9TH AND 16TH DEC CANCELLED.
The three games from 9th have been moved to 27th Mar with start times to be confirmed.
HALF THE SEASON OVER AND NOW IT IS XMAS
After the last games before the Christmas break Thirsk senior teams are showing to be in good form, with the men's firsts being the only team in difficulty.
Thirsk men's firsts received a lesson in the how to play hockey and the need to maintain possession of the ball by an outstanding top-of-the-table York side. Thirsk started yet again with an unfamiliar line-up with Don Petty making his second consecutive start in midfield. Midway through the half Petty was harshly adjudged to have fouled in the area and York dispatched the subsequent short corner to take an early lead. Liam Evans called up from the 2nds made his second appearance for the 1st team and put in a valiant performance down the left, but despite good attacking play down both flanks York extended their lead before halftime. Peter Harding starting the game at left back was moved into midfield and Dave Pickford was introduced into the centre of the park to try and combat the well-organised York midfield unit. Sam Knox again had a excellent game at right back, as did Nick Lane playing the sweeper position, but despite valiant defending the York
short corner routines were too well drilled and the home team were able to add 3 more goals to their tally in the second half. A 5-0 score line did not flatter York but Thirsk also in patches had some impressive build-up play, especially down the right where Phil Hughes and Rob Ramsden combined well on numerous occasions. The first team find themselves in the bottom two at Christmas but with only 1 point separating themselves with the 4 teams above, and two eminently winnable home games immediately after the seasonal break. Hopes are high that they will be able to pull themselves out of the relegation battle in the New Year.
Thirsk ladies seconds made hard work of their 1-0 win over Tadcaster Magnets, they had all the run of play in both halves, but again just could not put the ball in the net. Emily Thorpe, Rosie Wilson and Rebecca Wilson all had outstanding games pushing hard forward and putting together some great passes to keep the ball in Thirsks attacking half. A strong pass into the D from Bev Petty gave Rosie Wilson the opportunity to sweep the ball past the goalie. Sarah Goacher was always intercepting the ball early on the half way line and at one point from a defensive position found herself in the attacking circle, and was unfortunate to miss out on scoring. Every-one played well and Thirsk deserved there win. Player of the match was Emily Thorpe. The team are top of division 6.
The men's seconds were at home against Acomb who rest at the bottom of division 8. Acomb arrived with only 9 players so Thirsk felt confident of a victory. Despite this it took some 10 minutes before Thirsk scored with a shot by Ben Taylor. Thirsk were not concentrating and allowed a break away by Acomb to allow them a goal. Ben then made a fine finish to a run into the D to get his second. Chris Gabbott produced two from determined driving into the D to end the first half 4-1 up. From the whistle Acomb mounted several attacks against Thirsk but this time the defence held out and with numbers wearing down their defence Thirsk had goals from James Laking, Nathan Harding and then another from James to finish the game 7-1. Thirsk lie second in division 8. The ladies firsts drew 2-2 with Doncaster seconds. They are now in 7th position in the premier division.
AN UNDEFEATED WEEKEND.
It was a Thirsk men's first team missing 7 first choice players that travelled to Sheffield knowing an heroic performance would be needed to get a result. The defensive line-up was one which at the start of the season wouldn’t have raised eyebrows if it appeared on the 2nds team list, but Sam Knox, Patrick Jackson, Andy Young and Nick Lane acquitted themselves exceptionally throughout the entire game. This defensive line-up forced Don Petty and Jonathan Sharman to take up unusual positions in central midfield. Despite the strange look to the side Thirsk started very brightly but were twice caught by counter attacks and found themselves 2-0 down by half time. In the second half however Thirsk developed a cutting edge to their play and each Thirsk attack brought a raft of chances. A goal was quickly pulled back after half time when Sharman fed Rob Ramsden on the edge of the D and his reverse hit flew into the bottom corner, 2-1 and the game was back on. Andy Carney pulled the scores level after Sharman’s lift reverse stick shot was tapped in at the far post. Thirsk soon found themselves behind again however as the defence struggled to cope with the pacey Bankers forwards. However, Thirsk dug deep again and a Sheffield mistake allowed Carney to slot home from close range, before another well timed interception from Ramsden allowed him to slip in Carney for his 3rd hat-trick of the season. Chris Gabbott was a constant source of danger down the left hand side and his powerful runs into the D almost lead to Thirsk extending their lead further. The end to end nature of the game was always going to afford both teams chances and despite having dominated his man for the entire second half Nick Lane was unable to prevent his forward from getting lose and slotting in the equaliser with 2 minutes left. A brilliant performance from a team, very much the underdogs in this game, gained a well earned point. Sheffield University Bankers 4 - Thirsk 4.
Despite suffering their first defeat of the season last week, the men's seconds came out against Slazenger 3rds with no indication that another defeat was possible. From the whistle Thirsk attacked with flair and skill with a constant assault on the opposition's goal. It took only 15 minutes to wear the goal keeper down with a determined follow up reverse stick shot by Nathan Harding to open the scoring. By strong passing and strong running off the ball the second came shortly afterwards with a strike by the captain Richard Taylor. Ben Taylor then scored following a solo run from mid field; and the half ended after Ian Foxley slotted away a well struck short corner. The second half continued much as the first, Joe Dickinson in the Thirsk goal complaining that he only got to touch the ball twice in the whole game. A hat trick by Paul Doyle and another goal for Ben Taylor rounded out the game with a result of 8-0. This was some of the best team hockey the second team have played in a season that is the most successful for some time.
Thirsk 2 ladies managed a 1-1 draw against Wakefield 7. Thirsk had most of the play throughout both halves but this result did not really reflect the work and effort all the girls put in. A lot of shots on goal could not find there way past the solid goalkeeping from Wakefield, however, a cheeky chip in from Orlagh O'Shea producing the only goal for Thirsk. Even a couple of excellent solo runs from both Steph Evans and Emily Thorpe ended up over the back line. Beth Bradbury had an exceptionally solid game at center back, keeping calm and transfering the ball evenly throughout. This leaves Thirsk 2 still undefeated so far this season and top of division 6.
The ladies firsts also drew 1-1 away against Wakefield 4ths.
ANOTHER THREE WINS
Thirsk men's firsts were handed an unexpected advantage against Rotherham 2nds at the weekend when the visiting team turned up minus an umpire and subsequently had to play with 10 men as one of their players volunteered to take the whistle. However, even at full strength Rotherham were going to have struggled against a Thirsk side who had been playing well all season and this week decided to add the final pieces to the jigsaw - a cutting edge to their finishing. The first half started brightly with Sam Knox finding himself able to push up from right back and support the attackers. Good link-up play between Dave Pickford and Ian McClare led to a wonderful interchange of passes in the D which allowed McClare to slot the ball underneath the keeper to give Thirsk a 1-0 lead at half time. The second half started in the same vein but Thirsk cut out trying to overcomplicate their play and simplified their style with ruthless precision. A short corner slipped to Rob Ramsden allowed him to further add to his tally for this season and the youngster was instrumental in 2 more of the goals, setting up Dave Pickford and Andy Carney from the right hand side. The pick of the goals was saved for the end when Jonno Sharmann fired in a cross from the left hand side of the D. Man of the match Pickford was first to react to it and his deft touch from the edge of the area guided the ball into the far corner evading the luckless keeper. The 5-0 win lifts Thirsk out of the relegation places and above many of the strugglers also down that end of the table. The next 2 games before Christmas are on the road and they will be looking to put together back to back wins for the first time this season as they look to build towards the top half of the table.
The men's seconds were away at Bradford to play Bingley Bees in a top of the table clash. And so it proved with both sides moving the ball about leading to chances at both ends. Bingley were the first to score at a short corner with the ball drilled low into the bottom left corner. 1-0 down at half time Thirsk came out with more determination and again had several chances but could not convert them. Bingley achieved a second following a failure to clear the ball from a goal mouth scramble and struck the ball from close range. Thirsk did not stop attacking and were rewarded with a great lifted shot from the top of the D by Ben Taylor when he pounced on a ball cleared out of the Bingley area. Despite further chances Thirsk ended their unbeaten run with a 2-1 loss; but gave Bingley their hardest fought win at home so far this season.
Thirsk Ladies 1sts were away at Wakefield to play Slazengers who are currently sitting two places above Thirsk in the league table. Despite the freezing weather Thirsk didn’t take long to warm up and they soon put their name on the score sheet with a superb strike from Lynne Mckeown from a short corner. The home team fought back and soon equalised. With some superb passing from the Thirsk midfield and forward players between Hannah Fletcher, Anna Hunter, Jen Sanderson and Lizzie Walters, Thirsk were rewarded with a goal resulting from a strong run from Sanderson to Nic Gill who was well placed to tap the ball in at the back post. Shortly after Nic Gill increased the score line with her 2nd goal of the match ending the first half with Thirsk 3-1 up. The second half was a lot more heated and Thirsk conceded a goal, but with some great defending from Laura Fox, Sarah Goacher, Ruth Colsten and Jade Beckwith and saves from goalkeeper Val Grainger Thirsk managed to hold the score for a 3-2 win at the final whistle. This is Thirsk’s 4th win of the season and the 3rd consecutive. Laura Fox earned a well deserved Player of the Match.
The ladies seconds were at home against City of York 5ths and won 3-0.
THREE WINS WEEKEND
Thirsk men’s first team visited Ben Rhydding at the weekend, a team which has proved something of a bogey side over the past few seasons. However, with Ian McClare, an ex-Ben Rhydding player himself, in sparkling form of late, Thirsk were in high spirits. The first half started brightly and Thirsk were unlucky to find them selves behind to a well worked short corner. Paul Doyle and Rob Ramsden combined well down the right flank causing no end of problems for the home side. After forcing a series of short corners Thirsk pulled level with an Andy Carney deflection at the far post following a reverse stick shot by Ramsden. Thirsk were soon behind again to an identical Ben Rhydding short corner but it wasn’t long before Ramsden set up Carney again for his second of the match. After half time however, Thirsk somewhat fell to pieces. Despite good link-up play from Brian Cleere in midfield the Thirsk midfield was unable to provide the attackers with the same sort of service they had received in the first period. The defence also were unable to deal with the direct running of the Ben Rhydding attackers and soon found themselves 3-2 down; but things could have been different if a penalty flick appeal had been upheld. Thirsk continued to push forward but this left the defence more and more exposed. Two more goals quickly followed from Ben Rhydding. One highlight of the game was the successful debut of Patrick Jackson, making his first appearance for the team after impressing this season in the seconds. Patrick came on at right back midway through the first half and gave a measured and composed performance. Final score Ben Rhydding 5 – Thirsk 2.
Thirsk men's 2nds started the game, against Ben Rhydding 6ths, as the only unbeaten team in their division and lying in second place. Thirsk started brightly with good build up play from the midfield. Several half chances were created, and Trevor Bosomworth and Chris Gabbott combining down the right forced a penalty corner. Ian Foxley's lifted shot was too good for their goalkeeper, giving Thirsk a 1-0 lead. Thirsk continued to press, Liam Evans and James Laking attacked well down the left but two efforts were put wide.In the second half Ben Rhydding's skilful young players combined well with their experienced centre half to put pressure on the Thirsk defence, but Nick Lane and Dick Edwards restricted them to only one meaningful shot on the Thirsk goal. Thirsk continued to press and looked harshly treated when their defender stopped a certain goal with his feet on the line following good work from Ben Taylor and Chris Gabbott . Several penalty corners went close, and Thirsk pressed right to the final whistle, but had to settle for a deserved 1-0 win. Thirsk remain second in the division, with league leaders Bingley Bees as their next opponents.
The ladies firsts beat Leeds Adel 3-1.
Thirsk ladies 2nd's game started slowly, going 1-0 down early in the 1st half ,away against Leeds Adel 5ths; a little confusion in shirt colours not helping. A couple of good saves and strong defensive work keeping any further goals out. Orlagh O'Shea then scored twice at the back post, putting Thirsk 2-1 ahead at the end of the 1st half. A strong run from Chrissi Stapley-Hinton confused the home side and the following shot into the back of the net put Thirsk further into the lead. All the ladies played well together and deserved the winning result of Thirsk 3 Leeds Adel 2. Player of the Match; Chrissi Stapley-Hinton.
14 NOV SEES 15 GOALS SCORED.
Thirsk men's first team entertained Sheffield Hallam 5ths this week, only a few weeks after a thrilling 4-3 win against the Sheffield sides 4th team. Sheffield started with only 8 players due to a late arriving car but Thirsk were unable to take advantage of the earlier numerical advantage. The Sheffield side were soon back to full strength but despite the loss of their unexpected advantage Thirsk continued to dominate the game. In patches Thirsk looked unstoppable with Ian McClare and Rob Ramsden shifting the ball across the midfield at will. Unfortunately as the game drew towards half time Martin Garner was dis-possessed trying to bring the ball out of defence and Jeff Lewis was left helpless in a one on one situation. Paul Doyle was unlucky not to level the scores when his lifting shot narrowly missed the target from an acute angle. The second half saw Sheffield score another fortuitous goal but still Thirsk continued to push. A well worked short corner was slotted into the goal from the top of the area with around 10 minutes left setting up an exciting finish. Thirsk has welcomed back the newly married Pete Harding and his energetic running from defence, mirrored on the opposing flank by Brian Cleere, created chance after chance but Thirsk were unfortunate that all their efforts narrowly went wide. As it was the score ended 2-1 to the visitors but if they continue to play in the same fashion Thirsk should begin to pick up points quickly.
The men's second team travelled to Halifax to take on their 3rd team who lie one position above Thirsk. Having played the Halifax 4th team 2 weeks before and finished with a 1-1 draw the game was expected to be close. Both sides produced attacking hockey during the first half with chances falling to both teams but either saves by the keeper or bad finishing produced a half time result of 0-0. Both teams continued to play an attacking game and it took 20 minutes of the second half before a score. Thirsk producing a series of passes that finished with a shot by Chris Gabbott putting Thirsk one up. A short period of play following this goal found Halifax having several chances but Joe Dickinson in goal produced some inspired saves. Thirsk then recovered and took the game back to Halifax, leading to a short corner that with a well struck shot by Ben Taylor gave Thirsk a second goal. This seemed to take the drive out of Halifax and Thirsk finished 2-0 winners after a very strong performance.
Thirsk ladies first team headed to Harrogate this week for a late start game. The ladies knew that they had to win this game, with Harrogate at the bottom of the league it would have been an embarrassing defeat if Thirsk were to loose. With many of the team away 2 players from the 2nds kindly stepped in. Lissie Walters and Orla made their debut for the first team this season and they did it in style, both making superb runs down the left wing and they both put in some solid tackles. With Thirsk quick off the mark they were soon 2-0 up. However Harrogate were awarded a penalty flick which unfortunately Val could not keep out of the net. It could have been 3-1 up for Thirsk at half time if Jen Sanderson had not cracked under the pressure of a one on one attack with the Harrogate goalie. Great defending from Lynn McKewan, Laura Fox, Steph Wilkinson and Pip Carrick meant the Harrogate attackers couldnt get another goal before half time.
The second half saw some strong attacking from Helen Goacher and Ruth Colesten, and they were rewarded with 2 more goals, Helen adding 2 more goals to her tally moving her closer to top goal scorer. Harrogate managed to get one last goal near the end through a penalty corner but they couldnt bring back the lead that Thirsk had created. It was a superb team effort by all and lead to a well deserved victory for the ladies.
Another strong game for Thirsk Ladies 2nd team, a lot of positive forward play from all the players found Thirsk dominating both halves of the game against Halifax 4th's. The first half finished with Thirsk in a strong position with a 6-0 lead. The ladies came out in the 2nd half confidant and played well throughout with only a 10 minute lapse near the end of the 2nd half letting Halifax in, resulting in their 2 goals. Thirsk evened this out with their own 2 goals in the 2nd half resulting in a well deserved 8-2 win.
Goal scorers were: Bev Petty-4, Chrissi Stapley-Hinton-1, Steph Evans-2 and Orlagh Oshea-1. Player of the match went to Sarah Heath-Smith.
RESULTS FOR 7 NOV
Thirsk men’s firsts travelled to their away game with several players missing from the usual starting line up and the first half looked as if a white-wash might have been on the cards. Their opposition, Huddersfield second team, being second in the table. At half time Thirsk found themselves 1-0 down and were grateful to still be in the game. Desperate defending had been required from Don Petty and Sam Knox as Thirsk struggled to cope with the pace and positional play of their opponents. In the 2nd half Thirsk appeared to be more roused and a good interception and link-up play between Andy Carney and Paul Doyle led to Thirsk pulling level. It looked for a while as if Thirsk would snatch a point but a penalty corner conceded by Jonathan Sharman allowed the home team to regain the lead which they duly extended a few minutes later to make it 3-1. Liam Evans, making his debut for the first team, played well at left midfield and did some sterling defensive work but despite his and the teams efforts, Thirsk rarely made the Dragons keeper work. Result Huddersfield Dragons 3-Thirsk 1. It is to be hoped that Thirsk's strong home form continues as they look to move up the table, presently lying 9th, and secure their division 2 status.
The men's seconds were at home to Huddersfield 5ths, a team sharing third position with Thirsk, so promised to be an even match. And so it did with the first half ending 0-0 after each team having chances that were not successfully taken. The second half started as the first finished and each side continued to find an opening that could be exploited. Eventually Thirsk succeeded with a great individual run and strike by Chris Gabbott. Huddersfield came back at Thirsk and with 5 minutes still to play scored after several valiant clearances from in front of goal by Joe Dickinson in goal, with Andrew Young and Patrick Jackson also heavily involved. The game finished as it had started with both sides seeking dominance but not achieving any further score. Another 1-1 result keeps the seconds undefeated but they need to now win some games to get more points from the excellent performances they put in. Thirsk are 3rd in division 8 and are due to play the two teams above them in the next three weekends.
The ladies seconds were away at Horsforth for a morning game. The game started slowly with Thirsk not coming together as a team until after a well worked short corner gave Jade Beckwith the first goal. The second half saw Thirsk with nearly all the play resulting in a goal for Kate Tankard, 2 for Lissie Walters and nother this week for Chrissi Stapley-Hinton. Final score 5-0 to Thirsk. Player of the match was Emily Thorpe. This puts Thirsk 2nd in division 6.
The ladies firsts played at home against Ben Rhydding 2nds and lost 2-1. This leaves them in 10th place in the premier division.
LADIES GAMES ON 31ST OCT.
The ladies 1st team spent their Saturday afternoon at Weetwood this week, to play against Leeds Hockey Club. After a brisk warm up the ladies set onto the pitch determinated to win. With the experienced Val Granger having to stand down from goal keeping duty this week, Emily Bull stepped in to place. With some strong early play from the Leeds team in the Thirsk D, Emily made some brilliant saves but unfortunately one managed to slip past her. It was no time to give up though, and with some great play from Lynn McKewin at the back Thirsk managed to get the ball up to the other end where it was in the safe hands of Helen Goacher, Jen Sanderson and Nikki Gill. The 3 worked brilliantly together and managed to score Helen's first goal of the season. The midfield worked hard to back up the defence in the latter parts of the first half with some great tackles from Ruth Colesten and a few great runs from Anna Hunter. But unfortunately Thirsk couldn’t hold off the united Leeds and they scored a 2nd goal.
In the second half Thirsk battled as ever with some great tackles and determination from Steph Wilkinson and some great leadership and skill from Laura Fox at the back. But unfortunately we couldn’t stop the Leeds team from scoring another 3 goals. Even with some good runs and passes from the 3 up front and some determined defence play at the back it was not enough to hold them off. An unfortunate defeat for the Ladies team again! They are presently lying 10th in the premier division.
Thirsk 2nds played host to York University 2nds. At the beginning of the first half the two teams seemed to be quite evenly matched, until Thirsk found their stride and went 2-0 up with two beautifully struck balls by Bev Petty. Thirsk only seemed to become stronger in the second half with brilliant defending from Sarah Goacher and Charlotte Daynes. The match finished with Jo Lightfoot slipping in the last goal skillfully leaving the final score 3-0 to the home team. Player of the match was Chrissy Stapley-Hinton.
