A well deserved 5-2 win for Thirsk Ladies 2nd Team vs. Otliensiens 2nd’s on 18 Feb, with great hockey played throughout and some fantastically well worked short corners with strong accurate shots.

After a few weeks off due to bad weather the Thirsk ladies first team were ready for their home game on the 18 February against Dewsbury firsts. The game got off to a good start with Thirsk taking possession and applying pressure on the Dewsbury goalie. There was great play from Daisy Jackson to Emily Ramsden running into the D and with Anna Hunter ready for the deflection Thirsk got their first goal to lead 1-0. Dewsbury retaliated quickly and much to the efforts of the Thirsk defence the score was a 1-1 for half time.

In the second half Thirsk managed to pick up their pace and there was some great play between Hayley Maxwell, Lynne Mckoewn and Hannah Rodgers moving the ball up the pitch and applying pressure eventually rewarding Thirsk with a short corner. With great skills from Lynne Mckoewn and a pass to Hannah Rodgers Thirsk took a 2-1 lead. Dewsbury kept applying pressure but Thirsk’s defenders Maisy Bradbury, Stacey Lewis and Sarah Goacher didn’t allow them through with great interception of passes and passing the ball forward to Anna Morris who ran into attack. Thirsk were awarded another short corner and with Clare Goacher ready for a rebound the ball hit the back of the goal making the score 3-1. Again Dewsbury tried to fight back but with Val Grainger in goal for Thirsk their attempts failed and with a strong run from Clare Goacher she shot from the top of the D scoring the final goal of the match. The final score was 4-1 to Thirsk and player of the match was awarded to Clare Goacher.

Thirsk under 16 boys had an excellent set of games at Hull on Sunday 19th February. The first game was against Wakefield, and the sides were closely matched, but through very good team work and commitment, Thirsk won 2-1 with two goals both scored by Anthony Gillard after sustained pressure from Charlie Whitfield and Sam Gardiner. The defensive work in this game was very solid, with some good play from Ben Scaling, Ben Irving, Patrick Winstanley and Matthew Glegg. This victory gave the team some self belief and spurred them to work hard to get a second victory against Sheffield; the result was 2-0 with good poacher’s goals from Nick Edwards and Charlie Whitfield. Simon Cockerill in goal made some very good clearances to keep a clean sheet, and once again the defence played well, with some good marking and clearing play from Oliver Hill. The final game was against Driffield, a team known to be much stronger than Thirsk. Despite losing 2-1 in this game, this was an excellent team performance in which the boys never gave up working hard. Rafe Skippings put in a fantastic performance, chasing all loose balls and inspiring those around him. The goal from Sam Gardiner was first class, and put Driffield under real pressure. Overall, this was an excellent team performance and showed what the under 16s are really capable of. This would have ensured their promotion to division 1, but none of the other divisions played so they are to stay in division 2 for the next round.

Thirsk men’s second XI team travelled to Driffield on Saturday Jan 28th. The game started with Thirsk being in control and making some good passes down the flanks and up the middle. With a new formation being tried it worked well to start with, with Andrew Jackson making some brilliant passes out to the wings to James Laking and Richard Taylor. The first 15 minutes of the game both sides were pretty even both sides failing to reach the goal with some near misses. With a pass from Andrew Jackson from the half way line that found James Laking, who drove the ball deep into Driffields defence. Tom Ward pulling the last defender away to make a clear shot for James to hit it home. Driffield 0 – Thirsk 1! Driffield were quick to respond and made some fast passes and Thirsk were caught on the hop and they drew level.
Thirsk were awarded a short corner and with a brilliant feed from Nathan Harding gave Andrew Jackson the chance to get on the score sheet and he did do just that with Thirsk again taking the lead. This seemed to be a wakeup call for Driffield and they responded again by putting away two goals to finish the half ahead of Thirsk 3-2.
Second half under way and injuries where racking up with Richard out with a back problem the chance for Martin Brown to shine, made some solid tackles and kept Driffield out of Thirsk defence for a while. Thirsk had some good play up the wings and tracking the ball back round the backs. Unfortunately it was not enough to keep Driffield away and with in the second half they managed to score another 3 goals before the end. Thirsk where unlucky on a few occasions with some short corners being missed by the umpire. New recruits saw Patrick take to the pitch and as always some solid defending from Mike and Dean Porter. The game ended 6-2 defeat to Thirsk.
Match report by James Laking

Thirsk men’s first team faced a bottom of the table clash with Brigg and despite a very close game lost 3-2. The game started evenly but Brigg took the lead half way through the half through sloppy Thirsk marking. Thirsk battled back and scored following a period of pressure. The second half saw Thirsk fall behind again through a well-worked Brigg short-corner and this was quickly followed by a third, as a Thirsk counter attack broke down and Brigg drove forward. Thirsk were not finished and managed to pull one back through Sam Gardiner but Brigg held on for the victory.

On the 28th Jan 2012 Thirsk travelled to Leeds to play the top of the league Leeds UNI 3. Thirsk started the game off well with great movement of the ball around the pitch holding most of the possession. There was great passing from Anna Morris to Lynne Mckoewn moving the ball through the middle of the field with Daisy Jackson, Chrissy Stapley-Hinton and Steph Wilkinson moving the ball up the pitch. Leeds defenders were having to work hard to keep Thirsk out of the D but with a pass from Emily Ramsden and a good break from Clare Goacher the ball was ran fast into the D and with a shot the ball was nicely placed in the back of the goal by Anna Hunter. At half time the score was 1-0 to Thirsk.
Thirsk came on with determination to defend their score in the second half and there were some strong saves by the Thirsk Goalie Harriet Bagley. Thirsk defenders tackled hard with some great interceptions from Sarah Goacher, Beth Bradbury and Stacey Lewis with Hayley Maxwell moving the ball into the safety of the Thirsk attackers. Unfortunately Leeds were not going to let Thirsk have an easy game and managed to bring the score to a 1-1 draw early in the second half. Without letting their heads go down Thirsk fought back and with a strong hit into the D by Anna Hunter and a good deflection by Clare Goacher Thirsk saw themselves back in the lead at 2-1. With only minutes left to go Thirsk were giving their everything to keep the ball in the safety of their attacking half but Leeds managed to equalise with minutes go bringing the final score to a 2-2 draw. Great play from Thirsk against the top of the League. Sarah Goacher got player of the match.

On Sunday 22nd January 2012 the under 10 boys A team were starting in Division 1. The team comprised Ollie Dale (GK); George Hunt (Sweeper); Henry Houseman (Left Mid), Archie Lawson (Right Mid), Tim Durkin (Left forward); Mathew Newman (Centre forward/mid) and Flyn Mullins (Right Forward).
Thirsk 2 Rotherham 2. This was an end to end game with the first goal coming from a cross into the D which Mathew quickly put past the keeper and the second from an early shot from Flyn at the edge of the D.
Thirsk 0 York 4. The York game in December resulted in a 0-0 draw but unfortunately the boys were not on form today. Too many balls came through the centre of the pitch and the defence were not strong enough for York’s attacks. Ollie fought well on the back line but unfortunately the strikers had too much space and opportunity.
Thirsk 0 Harrogate 3. The result did not reflect the effort and opportunities. This was a very even game. The boys looked positive and were on their toes having been reminded that they had beaten most of the teams previously and were as good as or even better than today’s opposition. The whole team worked much harder and attacked the goal several times but frustratingly did not find the back of the net.
Ben Rhydding 3 Thirsk 1. Ben Rhydding had won all their matches today and not conceded a goal until Archie managed to get a shot past the goalie. Thirsk battled to the end. Ollie had an incredible game and was peppered by Rhydding’s forwards on several occasions.
Well done boys. You picked up the pieces and worked harder in the Harrogate and Ben Rhydding matches. You are a good team of players with great potential and have all improved since the beginning of the season. Tim Durkin had his debut game for the first team and worked hard on the left managing to create some good opportunities and gained confidence as the morning progressed. Well done Tim. Thank you to the team supporters who braved the cold. Sue Houseman, Team Manager.

Thirsk Boys U10 B Squad – Division 3 (of 4) Results:
Thirsk B 0 – 3 Leeds
Thirsk B 0 – 0 Driffield
Thirsk B 0 – 0 Slazenger
Thirsk B 0 – 2 Leeds
Thirsk B 0 – 0 Driffield
Thirsk B 1 – 1 Slazenger

The U10 league was restructured after Thirsk’s solid introduction to the league in December, and Thirsk were effectively promoted from the bottom league. As a result, the opposition were expected to be somewhat stronger.
The team were: Dan Garlick, Arthur Webster-Jones, Fred Hunt, Harry Cavadias, Connor Wilkinson, Sebastian Graham, Thomas Molyneux, William Molyneux, Joe Stobbs
Thirsk started slowly in the first match and were unable to retain possession for any significant period of time. Leeds used their forwards effectively to bypass the Thirsk defence and leave Daniel with little protection from a series of attacks. The remaining matches saw a different Thirsk team on the pitch, although the results did not match the skills and effort of the team. In his first tournament, Joe settled well in the central defensive role and spread play effectively between the wide players and centre forward. Sebastian (mainly central), Connor (mainly left), Harry and William (mainly right) showed good determination to force saves from the keepers in each of the remaining matches. It was difficult to see how we failed to score until the final game when so many chances were created. Thomas, Fred and Arthur played well in defence alongside Joe, putting into practice the tackling skills from training. During the course of the day, Connor, Sebastian and Thomas suffered a variety of injuries, but with 9 in the squad we were able to keep going effectively, and each of them came back after a rest to help the team continue. In the final game, Joe put a great run together from inside his own half to score the only goal of the day and deservedly won the Players’ Player of the Day award, but a good indication of the strength of the team was that votes were spread across 5 players. Although the results mean that we will play the final tournament of the season in League 4, the squad should be more that capable of bouncing straight back up. Player of the day: Joe Stobbs. Thanks to Sally Hunt for umpiring and all the parents for their support.

On Sunday 22nd January 2012 in he morning saw the next round of the U14 girls Yorkshire Youth League. The first two games were very easy for Thirsk U14’s, they had all the play in both games, needing to play the ball around a little more to create even more chance’s. Final goal in first game against Slazengers was from a lovely run down the wing with a great pass to the penalty spot where the ball could be easily pushed past the goal keeper. In their second game, against Hull, Thirsk played with 11 outfield players passing the ball better and using all the players to move the ball around, playing mostly in Hull’s attacking 23. In the final game Thirsk again had most of the play, unfortunately they started to stand off from Harrogate and allowed them to run forward into the D and score with a well struck hit from the top, goal keeper standing no chance as it went high into top corner. A good day for the girls. Deserved winners of the first 2 games and unlucky in final game. Thirsk 4-0 Slazengers; Thirsk 3-0 Hull B; Thirsk 0-1 Harrogate.

Thirsk Mens 1st team struggled away to Lincoln Roses despite a brave performance. Phil Hughes made his goalkeeping debut for Thirsk and turned in a fine performance. From the off Thirsk were under some pressure from a strong Lincoln side, but managed to keep a clean sheet until half way through the half when Lincoln scored from a short-corner and then followed up with three more strikes before half time. Thirsk struck one back in second half through a well worked Dave Pickford goal, but Lincoln keep pushing, scoring another four to end 8-1 victors.

Thirsk played Colne Valley 3 at home on the 21st of January. Having won the last 4 games Thirsk were keen to keep their winning streak up and started the first half off with great pace and passing. With great skill from Lynne Mckoewn getting around Colne Valley defenders in the D and passing to Clare Goacher to score, Thirsk were quickly in the lead. Colne Valley were quick to retaliate though bringing the score to 1-1 and soon after taking the lead from a short corner. Colne Vally nearly managed to gain a 2 goal lead shortly after but Hayley Maxwell had an amazing save right on the goal line. Thirsk then picked up their pace and did not give up and with good running from Daisy Jackson and Emily Ramsden to Lynne Mckoewn, a replica goal to the first was scored by Clare Goacher making the score a 2-2 draw at half time.
The second half was a test for Thirsk with Colne Vally applying the pressure and even though Thirsk had most of the possession they struggled to add to the score. There was great passing and intercepting between Stacey Lewis and Chrissy Stapley-Hinton moving the ball up the left hand side but Colne Vally managed to make a break and got rewarded with a goal from a short corner putting them in a 3-2 lead. Thirsk didn’t let their heads go down and with only 10minutes left they gave all they had. Val Grainger made some great saves and Beth Bradbury and Sarah Goacher made some great interceptions stopping Colne Vally getting into the D and moving the ball up the pitch to attack. Again Lynne Mckoewn ran the ball into the D and with lots of shouting and a strong shot from a free Steph Wilkinson a goal was scored giving Thirsk a 3-3 draw. Thirsk battled on and with a great run up the left hand side into the D the winning goal was scored by Anna Hunter with 2 minutes to go. The end score was a deserved 4-3 to Thirsk. Anna Hunter, Steph Wilkinson and Lynne Mckoewn got joint player of the match.
