THIRSK HC – UMPIRING SUCCESS
A long season for Thirsk HC has finally come to an end. For the last 6 weeks players from as young as five up to 14 have been coming along to the club and having a go at umpiring. All players attending were issued with whistles as part of this umpiring initiative and this has proven to be very successful, although very annoying for parents. Club coaches/players and young leaders mentoring the younger ones, giving all youngsters a better understanding about the rules of hockey.
The course consisted of theory, a written test paper and then a practical assessment. This initiative culminated in 15 people from Thirsk HC completing their practical exam of the Foundation Umpires Hockey Award on Wednesday 20th May, all successfully passing. This award is the first step on the ladder for youngsters aged 13 years and up also for adults; being parents or players interested in the game; to gain an award in umpiring. Umpires are a precious commodity in any sport and Thirsk HC are starting them off young so they will hopefully continue on with umpiring and eventually gain a Level 1 umpires award.
A total of 16 people attending all passing with flying colours, only one of which was outside of Thirsk HC which bodes well for the clubs umpiring future.
With a continuing development plan the club hopes these young players will now gain further experience by umpiring for the clubs junior teams in the Yorkshire Youth Hockey leagues that Thirsk HC enter at different age groups.
Again Ellie Skippings (pictured) was invited to this years North Youth Festival, being one of the youngest to be asked along to umpire yet again a great achievement for her and for the club.
Many thanks must also go to Richard Skippings as tutor and assessor, Christine Renshaw assessor and to Joanna Marsden PDM for Thirsk School Sports Partnership for the use of their facilities.
